Last year, I wrote an article about the SSL certificate grading of banks in Hong Kong. This time, I would like to choose DBS and HSBC for the research. It is because DBS was the highest SSL certificate grading at that time - Grade A while HSBC is the largest bank in Hong Kong even it was Grade C.
The Research
Since pentesting a target without written authorization is illegal, this research is only done on recon phase only. Therefore, it is an incomplete research. Be keep in mind that it is for reference only.
I have written an article about security headers of a web site, such as HSTS, HPKP and XSS Protection. You can refer to it if you do not know what securty headers are. The control web site for this research is my personal site which is consider to be secured.
DBS Bank (Hong Kong) 星展銀行(香港)
The ebanking login page (https://internet-banking.hk.dbs.com/IB/Welcome) is tested and find out that it is upgraded from A to A+ as HSTS security header is set properly this time. The cookie is also set to be secured. Meanwhile, it is still protected by Akamai (WAF/DDoS).
However, HPKP and XSS protection security headers are missing and setting not properly respectively. The site may be vulnerable to XSS and Man-In-The-Middle (MiTM) attack even HSTS is enforced.
Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) 滙豐銀行
The ebanking login page (https://www.ebanking.hsbc.com.hk/1/2/logon?LANGTAG=en&COUNTRYTAG=US) is tested and find out that the grading is remained unchange - Grade C as TLS 1.2 is not set and RC4 cipher is used for older protocols as well as the VeriSign, Inc / Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority is not set properly.
Meanwhile, HSTS, HPKP and XSS protection security headers are missing. Cookie is not security set properly. Therefore, it may be vulnerable to MiTM and XSS attacks.
Conclusion
If not set properly, HPKP will cause error when browsing. Therefore, most webmasters will not touch it in order to prevent the downtime. HSTS and XSS protection security headers as well as cookie secure settings are not difficult and there is no side effect. However, most webmasters are ignored those settings due to misconcept.
In my opinion, ebanking sites should be very secured in order to prevent the attacks.

[RESEARCH] SSL Certificate Grading of Banks in Hong Kong
In order to understand the information security condition in Hong Kong, I select website of banks in Hong Kong for SSL certificate checking. The check is aimed for testing the strength of the SSL certificate, Man-In-The-Middle attack prevention and vulnerability. The web application vulnerability and corporation online banking are not in the testing scope. However, most SSL certificates may be shared with sub-domains.
The check are based on "List of Banks In Hong Kong". I use Qualys SSL Labs online testing tool for the check.
The result of the check (the check is carried out on April 19, 2016) is rated in SSL Grade Ranking :
Grade A

The following three banks are implemented HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) to force the users' browser to use HTTPS connection. This has some degree of Man-In-The-Middle attack (MITM) protection. However, the HPKP (HTTP Public Key Pinning) is not implemented. Therefore, it has a risk of being attacked by MITM attack. Meanwhile, China CITIC Bank International 中信銀行國際 website has POODLE vulnerability for the SSL protocol that makes her grading down to F.

(3) Fubon Bank (Hong Kong) 富邦銀行(香港)
Even the highest ranking DBS Bank (Hong Kong) 星展銀行(香港) do not implement HPKP (HTTP Public Key Pinning), she has a risk to face Man-In-The-Middle attack even she used HSTS. Attackers can use fake SSL certificate to bypass HSTS protection when HPKP is not in force.
It is very interesting that the largest bank in Hong Kong (Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation 滙豐銀行) only bearing a Grade C rank. I wonder why no website of banks in Hong Kong bearing a Grade A+ SSL certificate even my personal site is grading A+.

I think the IT department of the banks may misunderstand or may be not fully understood the purpose of SSL certificate for a website. In addition, they may even do not know the limitation of HSTS that can be bypassed by the attackers. In my opinion, the best practice of SSL certificate implementation is to adopt the HPKP to reduce the MITM attacks risk at the moment.
The low grading of the rank is not the excuse of backward compatible to old browsers. To compatible to old or vulnerable browsers will void the security of the website for sure. Some low grading website of the banks even compatible to insecure protocol (RC4 {please refer to the bottom of this article for details}) which will place a trap to their clients.]
In conclusion, all website of banks in Hong Kong are facing a risk of being attacked by Man-In-The-Middle attack. As reference to this result, it is predicted that most websites in Hong Kong are not good at SSL Grading.

At the victim's machine, open a browser, such as Firefox and go to GMail. You will be asked to accept an untrusted certification. Just accept the certificate and you will be directed to the login screen of GMail.
When the victim login to the GMail, his/her username and password will be logged on the Attacker's machine. The display will be similar to the following :
HTTP : 74.125.71.106:443 -> USER: samiux PASS: password INFO: https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html&zy=l&bsv=llya694le36z&sYou will find that USER: samiux and PASS: password.
Remarks :
To delete the untrusted certificate on Firefox at victim's machine : "
Edit" -- "Perference" -- "View Certificate List" -- "Server". You will find something like the following. You just delete them all.Thawte Consulting (Pty) Ltd.
